Designing Bitcoin Savings for the Real World

When I turned 18, my parents handed me an envelope.

Inside was everything they’d set aside since the day I was born. Every month, for eighteen years, they’d taken a cut of their income and saved it. Not stocks. Not property. Just cash in a savings account, the way their parents had done it. Safe. Steady. Patient.

With that money, I bought a laptop for university. Not a house deposit. Not a year off. A laptop. Eighteen years of discipline, and I walked out of the shop with something that’d be obsolete in three years.

That’s not on them. The habit was good. The consistency was real. The problem was not that better instruments didn’t exist. The problem was that they were never made simple enough for ordinary families to use with confidence.

Savings accounts pay interest, but over the last two decades in Europe, that yield has rarely come close to matching inflation. The nominal balance grows slightly. The real purchasing power shrinks anyway. This is how most modern monetary systems are built to operate. Nobody explains this when they hand you the envelope.

Bitcoin offers a different instrument. It can be held directly in self-custody, without a third-party custodian. Fixed supply, globally portable. Its long-term price trajectory, measured in years rather than months, has moved upward against every major fiat currency it has been priced in, though past performance is not a guarantee and the volatility along the way has been real and sometimes brutal.

I now save in Bitcoin for my kids. Small amounts, automated, every month. If they decide to study one day, the money should be there. Unlike my parents, I’m not saving in something likely to lose purchasing power while I’m not looking.

But the instrument is only part of the answer. The platform matters just as much. And thinking about this as a product problem is where it gets interesting.

This article focuses on individual savers, not businesses or institutional investors. That’s a separate problem.


The real product problem is not buying Bitcoin

Most of the category conversation is still about first purchase. How easy is onboarding? How low are the fees?

Fair questions. Some have been largely answered. But first purchase is the beginning of the product, not the product itself.

The harder problems start after someone buys their first Bitcoin. And they look very different depending on who that person is and how far along the journey they are.

Most platforms treat their users as one segment. The first-time buyer, the committed DCA saver six months in, and the person thinking about what happens to their stack if something happens to them are not the same user. A product strategy that treats them identically will fail most of them.


Not one user. Four.

The new saver wants to start small. They don’t need financial theory or five educational rabbit holes. They need clear fees, a fast first purchase, an easy recurring-buy setup, and a path into basic self-custody without getting overwhelmed. This is the largest segment. It’s also where trust is earned or lost for good.

The committed saver already believes enough to keep going. They’re contributing regularly, their balance is growing, and they’re starting to ask better questions. Their needs are less about activation and more about retention and conviction. Once someone is active, the question isn’t “can we get them to buy?” It’s “can we help them keep going for years, through the moments when the market makes them doubt themselves?”

As balances grow, a new question surfaces: is a single hardware wallet in a drawer still the right setup? A 2-of-3 multisig arrangement, where a trusted third party holds one key as a backup, adds a recovery layer without giving up ownership. This is where collaborative custody starts to make sense for some users.

The household planner has stopped thinking about Bitcoin as an individual experiment. They’re thinking about their partner, their children, and what happens if something happens to them. Gifting, shared visibility, beneficiary planning, and inheritance guidance become real product jobs here.

One important nuance: when someone dies, the recurring purchase stops. The income that funded it is gone. The heir receives the Bitcoin but isn’t continuing the savings plan. Inheritance planning is a protection story, not a retention story.

But if the platform is already part of the custody structure, inheritance becomes a continuity moment rather than a dead end. The heir inherits a platform relationship and a working custody setup. With guidance, they can begin their own savings journey from a foundation that already exists. That creates a metric worth tracking: heir-to-active-user conversion rate, where active means any continued engagement with the platform.

The advanced capital user is smaller, more valuable, and much easier to get wrong. They may want sophisticated custody, higher-touch service, or access to liquidity against their Bitcoin. The “buy, borrow, die” pattern, keep the asset, borrow against it, access liquidity, repay from income or appreciation, is rational for this segment. The infrastructure exists. Non-custodial lending platforms like Debifi (https://debifi.com) and Firefish (https://firefish.io) allow savers to use Bitcoin as collateral with transparent, verifiable custody. But borrowing is not the default next step for the average saver. It adds interest expense, margin management, and a very different kind of psychological pressure. A savings platform doesn’t need to build this itself. Integration with partners who have already solved it is the right model.


The psychology problem shapes everything

Even with the right asset and a recurring plan in place, staying the course is harder than it sounds.

Bitcoin’s price can drop 40% in weeks. When it does, every headline says the thesis is dead. Without something anchoring a saver to their original reasoning, doubt accumulates faster than savings does.

History suggests a meaningful number of savers exit at exactly the wrong moment. Not because they were wrong. Because nobody helped them hold on when it mattered most.

The transaction is easy. The conviction is hard. That gap is where most savings behaviour breaks down.

There is also a design problem underneath the psychology one. The basic automation exists. A recurring purchase, set once, moving funds monthly. Many platforms already offer this. The mechanics are solved.

What Bitcoin savings still lacks is the stickiness that makes pension systems so durable. Pension contributions leave your salary before it hits your account, directly from payroll, before you ever see the money. Employers match contributions. Governments offer tax incentives. Society treats it as a baseline expectation. Stopping requires a deliberate act.

None of that exists for Bitcoin savings yet. Employer Bitcoin matching programmes and tax-advantaged savings accounts are regulatory and market development questions, not product ones. But they’re coming. The platforms building compliance infrastructure now are best positioned when they do.


The North Star

A good north star does one thing: when it moves up, the company earns more money because customers are getting more value. No trade-off. Just alignment.

For a retail Bitcoin savings product:

Monthly Recurring Savings Volume (MRSV) — total fiat converted through active recurring purchase plans in the trailing 30 days.

When more users activate a recurring plan, MRSV rises. When users stay through a bear market instead of cancelling, MRSV holds. When users increase their contribution, MRSV grows. The platform earns a percentage fee on every transaction in that volume.

It’s also a clean prioritisation filter. Any feature that doesn’t plausibly move MRSV should wait. One-off purchases don’t move it. Sell transactions don’t move it. Borrowing doesn’t move it. MRSV keeps the product honest about what it’s actually building.

Key supporting diagnostics: time to first recurring plan, month-6 and month-12 retention, cancellation rate during major drawdowns, and contribution expansion rate over time. These tell you why MRSV is moving. MRSV tells you whether any of it matters.


How I’d prioritise the roadmap

The four segments define the problem. The roadmap below is the answer. Five problems, in the order they need to be solved, each with a measurable outcome tied to MRSV.

Phase 1: Remove the barriers to habit formation. Most people who intend to start saving never form a durable habit. They drop off during onboarding or make one purchase and never return. The desired outcome: a meaningful percentage of users complete their first recurring purchase in their first session. This problem is mostly solved in the category. The job is to maintain and improve, not treat it as the main gap.

Phase 2: Help savers survive their first bear market. This is the single biggest lever on MRSV and the largest unaddressed gap in the category. A user who cancels during the first bear market never reaches month 12. The desired outcome: cancellation rate during drawdowns falls significantly. Month-6 and month-12 retention improves. The platform becomes a source of honest context during volatility, not a source of anxiety.

The default view matters. Some platforms lead with accumulated BTC and contribution history. That’s the right instinct. Others open to a live price and percentage change. That’s a trading interface, not a savings interface. For a DCA saver, a price drop isn’t bad news. It means the same amount buys more sats. A platform that communicates this clearly is doing something most don’t.

Phase 3: Make saving structural, not heroic. Saving currently requires too many active decisions. The desired outcome: average monthly fiat invested per active recurring buyer grows over time. Access is no longer the hard part. Design is.

The next wave of winning products won’t be defined only by who lets users buy Bitcoin fastest. They’ll be defined by who understands the journey best: which segment they’re serving, what that segment actually needs, and how to sequence capabilities responsibly.

It’s also worth noting that mainstream adoption may come through traditional banking apps as much as through Bitcoin-specific platforms. BBVA and others are already integrating Bitcoin into existing banking surfaces. That path is real. But the product design challenges this article describes apply regardless of distribution channel. A bank that adds Bitcoin savings to its app will face the same five problems in the same order.

Different platforms will answer the collaborative custody question differently. Relai has built its identity around self-custody-first and simple. What matters is that each platform has a clear, deliberate answer that fits its users and its core promise.

The goal worth building toward isn’t a platform that maximises fee revenue. The platforms that stay honest about that tend to be the ones still around in a decade.
